If you haven’t yet heard Anthony Trionfo’s flute playing then you are in for a treat. He is one the most brilliant young virtuosos of the instrument that you are likely to hear. Anthony and his collaborator, the brilliant Naumberg winner Albert Cano Smit have chosen a delightful program for this special telecast and, as a bonus, our beloved Music Director Eugenia Zukerman will join Anthony and Albert in two of the pieces.
BÉLA BARTÓK (1881-1945) • arr. Paul Arma • 12:00
In his younger days, BĂ©la BartĂłk was renowned for collecting Hungarian and Romanian folk music. He arranged many for solo piano and that is how we usually hear them. However, we know for a fact that he heard some of them played on peasant flutes, so it will be no surprise that one of his students, the composer Paul Arma, arranged several of them for flute and piano in this Suite Payasanne Hongroise. Incidentally, the famous violinist Josef Szigeti also made arrangements for violin and piano, and he and BartĂłk actually recorded them. The themes are simple, usually fairly brief, and often in modal style, meaning, not in formal major and minor keys.
ERWIN SCHULHOFF (1894-1942) • 15:00
This sonata is an impressive work by a Czech composer who is only now being recognized, sixty or more years after his untimely, not to say tragic, death in a Nazi concentration camp. The American composer Aaron Rabuska describes Erwin Schulhoff's Sonata for Flute and Piano (1927) as “an impressionistic sonata with some hints of jazz. The mood is by turns dreamy and playful.”
The opening allegro moderato glides; the second allegro giocoso teases, the third andante is a dreamy aria while the fourth allegro molto gaio is exactly that – cheerful, very gay (and with a hint of boogie).
PHILIPPE GAUBERT (1879-1941) • 13:00
Philippe Gaubert was a prominent French flutist, teacher, conductor and composer, and a primary exponent of the French flute school. He was both Professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire and Principal Conductor of the Paris Opera, but his principal legacy may be those works which are a significant part of the flute repertoire. They are graciously written, fully idiomatic, both for the instrument itself and the French impressionist harmonic language.
Franz Doppler was an Austrian flute virtuoso and opera composer, now known mainly for his flute music. The Andante and Rondo exists in two forms: for two flutes and piano; also for flute, violin and piano. Franz’s brother Karl was also a well-known flutist.

Praised as “a musician of prodigious talent and scintillating personality” at his New York recital debut, flutist Anthony Trionfo recently debuted with orchestra in New York, performing the Ibert Flute Concerto with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s on the Young Concert Artists Series at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.
Mr. Trionfo won First Prize at the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He received the further distinction of being the first YCA artist to win the inaugural LP Classics Debut Recording Prize, granting him a commercial recording. In 2018, he debuted in the YCA Series at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall and Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, premiering a new work by YCA Composer-in-Residence Katherine Balch.
Anthony Trionfo took the stage for the first time at fourteen, performing with the Las Vegas Philharmonic as a winner of their Young Artist Concerto Competition. He also performed with the “President’s Own” Marine Band during his teenage years, appeared on From the Top as a recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award, and won the Alexander & Buono International Flute and National YoungArts Foundation Competitions.
Anthony Trionfo is pursuing his master’s degree under the tutelage of James Walker at the Colburn Conservatory of Music, where he has been a Teaching Fellow. He graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy, having studied with Nancy Stagnitta, and has performed in masterclasses with Emmanuel Pahud, and YCA alumnae Mimi Stillman and Paula Robison. In addition to more formal performances Mr. Trionfo is committed to community outreach, teaching through the Jumpstart program in Los Angeles.
Spanish/Dutch pianist Albert Cano Smit is already becoming an audience favorite for his performances as soloist with orchestra and in recitals around the world.
Mr. Cano Smit won First Prize at the 2019 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and will make his New York debut at Merkin Concert Hall and his Washington, DC debut at the Kennedy Center.
Mr. Cano Smit is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma with Robert McDonald at The Juilliard School. Previous teachers include Ory Shihor, Graham Caskie and Marta Karbownicka. He has benefited from extensive artistic advice by YCA alumni Richard Goode and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, with whom he gave four-hand performances at Zipper Hall in Los Angeles and Wallis Annenberg Center Hall in Beverly Hills. Mr. Cano Smit is an alumnus of the Colburn School and the Verbier Festival Academy.
Eugenia Zukerman is an internationally renowned flutist and writer. She was the artistic director of the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado for 13 years and the arts correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning for more than 25 years. She is the author of two novels, two works of nonfiction, and numerous screenplays, articles, and book reviews. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1944, Eugenia graduated from the Julliard School of Music and lived in New York City for many years. A mother of two daughters and grandmother to two, she makes her home in upstate New York with her husband, two horses, three dogs, and assorted wildlife.
Point of Order Productions is a video production company serving New York City and the Hudson Valley. Working with musicians, artists, corporate clients, and nonprofit institutions, Point of Order Productions has produced a variety of media, from music videos and branded content to feature films and documentaries.
Hailing from Rhinebeck, NY, audio engineer Marc Mancus, has over 10 years of experience working in both studio and live audio production settings. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Audio Engineering from the SAE Institute in London, UK, he was the Studio Manager for the Anjunabeats & Anjunadeep Record Labels. During his work in the UK, he assisted in the audio production for works by artists such as, Above&Beyond, ilan Bluestone, and the Paul Garner Band. Following his time in the UK, Marc relocated back to the Hudson Valley, and began working in live sound production with Firehouse Productions in Red Hook, NY. He has since worked as an audio technician for the Latin Grammy Awards, the MTV Music Video Awards, and the iHeartRadio Music Festival, among many others. In addition to his degree from the SAE Institute, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and French Studies from St. Lawrence University.
Marc is currently the Production Coordinator for the Bard College Conservatory of Music. He and his fiancée, soprano Katherine Rossiter, reside in Tivoli, NY with their cat, Bella.
